What is a break?

In a break (box break), sealed product – usually a booster display – is opened live and the pulled cards are distributed to participants according to a fixed scheme. Color spots are common: one spot covers all cards of one color (White, Blue, Black, Red or Green), all multicolored cards, all colorless cards or all lands. This calculator shows what is statistically inside each of those spots.

How do we calculate the expected value?

For sets with official booster compositions (MTGJSON) we know the print sheets and their weights – i.e. the probability of each card appearing in each slot of a booster. We multiply those probabilities with current European market prices (Cardmarket) and sum them per color spot. If a set has no composition data, a generic slot model is used instead – clearly marked as an approximation in the results.

Where do the pull rates come from?

From the same booster compositions. Wizards does not publish complete official pull rates – the community-maintained sheet data (MTGJSON) is the most accurate publicly available source and includes the officially confirmed odds from set announcements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the expected value a guarantee?
No. The expected value is a statistical average over a very large number of boosters. A single break can land well above or below it – that variance is exactly what makes breaks exciting.
Which prices are used in the calculation?
Current European market prices (Cardmarket, EUR) from our daily price import. US prices (TCGplayer) may differ.
Why can I not select every booster type?
For each set we only offer the booster types that actually exist(ed) as purchasable products – a set without Collector Boosters will not show one.
What do "exact" and "approximation" mean?
"Exact" means the calculation is based on the set's official booster composition (print sheets, slot weights, foil rates). "Approximation" means no composition data exists for the set and a generic slot model per booster type estimates the distribution.
