An activated mana ability doesn't go on the stack — it can't be targeted, countered or responded to (605.3b). Your opponent would have had to kill the Elves before the activation.

605.3bAn activated mana ability doesn’t go on the stack, so it can’t be targeted, countered, or otherwise responded to. Rather, it resolves immediately after it is activated. (See rule 405.6c.)

The fine print

Not everything that produces mana is a mana ability: it must not have a target and must not use a loyalty symbol. An ability with a target (": target …") or a regular trigger goes on the stack as usual — and can be responded to.

The frustration Bolt
