Split Second
Judge Level 1Krosan Grip is on the stack — and suddenly almost nobody is allowed to do anything.
Cards involved
Krosan Grip on the stack
Your opponent controls Sol Ring. You cast Krosan Grip targeting it. The spell has split second: as long as it's on the stack, players can't cast spells or activate abilities that aren't mana abilities.
702.61Split Second
What happens?
Your opponent has Counterspell and two untapped Islands.
What can they do now?
Pick an answer to continue.
Split second freezes active play (702.61a). Important for the exam: triggered abilities still trigger and are put on the stack — only casting and activating are forbidden.
702.61aSplit second is a static ability that functions only while the spell with split second is on the stack. “Split second” means “As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t cast other spells or activate abilities that aren’t mana abilities.”
What still works
Mana abilities (tapping lands) and special actions like turning a morph creature face up — neither uses the stack (702.61b). The classic judge case: "responding" to Krosan Grip by unmorphing is perfectly legal.
702.61bPlayers may activate mana abilities and take special actions while a spell with split second is on the stack. Triggered abilities trigger and are put on the stack as normal while a spell with split second is on the stack.
Grip resolves
Sol Ring is destroyed. There is no direct answer to split second — only preparation.
